Training

Lab tests

Lab tests for training: what’s worth checking before you start, what to monitor over time, athlete-specific nuances, and common interpretation mistakes.

Why labs can help

Lab tests can support health screening and risk awareness, but they are only one piece of the picture and must be interpreted in context (age, sex, training, diet, medications).

Before starting

  • CBC
  • ferritin (and B12 if indicated)
  • glucose / HbA1c
  • lipids
  • creatinine & eGFR
  • ALT/AST (note training can raise them temporarily)

Athlete nuances

  • CK can rise after hard training
  • AST/ALT can rise from muscle work
  • creatinine can be higher with more muscle

BALANS in practice

Use labs to guide decisions—not to hunt problems in healthy people.
